Our Commitment to Continuing Professional Development

Optometrists Association Victoria views Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as an essential part of the practice of optometry. CPD is necessary to maintain and improve the standard of care provided to patients, and to maintain the professional image of optometry in the broader community. We also see the knowledge and understanding gained through the ongoing engagement with research and clinical practice as an indispensable part of a rich and fulfilling professional life.

All practising optometrists are required by national law to undertake ongoing CPD. They must earn 40 points each year for approved activities. Optometrists Association fully supports this requirement.

Optometrists Association Victoria is a registered provider of CPD-eligible courses for optometrists. The Association is committed to regularly offering CPD-eligible activities, and ensuring these activities are both accessible to and relevant to our members.

Some of our current activities include:

  • the Southern Regional Congress (a three-day conference held in Melbourne each year); and

  • small seminars, group activities, workshops or lectures on identified specific topics.

Optometrists Association Victoria ensures it offers CPD activities covering a range of professional development issues including clinical care, ocular therapeutics, and business or practice management issues.

The overwhelming majority of our members are committed to CPD, and view it as a fundamental element in their professional lives. As a professional association, we acknowledge and support this commitment.
