Continueing professional development (CPD) is essential to maintain and improve standards of care for patients and advance the profession.
CPD has become a mandatory requirement of registration for all optometrists. As of 1 July 2010, the Health Practitioner Registration National Law Bill 2009 came into effect. A new CPD program has been operational since 1 December 2010.
The Optometry Board of Australia (OBA) has developed the new requirements for CPD. The program specifies minimum levels of CPD participation from optometrists. Optometrists can choose from a range of activities that may contribute to their ongoing professional development.
The new system is broadly based on the old Association model. Both programs incorporate a CPD point system, to allow different weightings for different activities based on their relevance to practice and educational value. For example, more points per hour are allocated to presentations that incorporate assessment or interaction.
The OBA authorises Optometrists Association Australia to administer the CPD program, which includes granting of accreditation for CPD activities and assigning CPD points.
For the OBA CPD standard and guidelines, members should check the OBA website.

Non-accredited CPD activities
Members are reminded they need to renew their registration with the Optometry Board of Australia prior to 30 November each year.
In previous years members have been given the option to complete an Additional CPD Activity Claim Form in order for the Association to maintain a record of non-accredited CPD activities. This form is no longer available. This is due to the new Optometry Board of Australia CPD registration standard requirements which requires every registered optometrist to maintain a record of their CPD undertaken. Optometrists Association Australia is only able to record accredited CPD in your member profile. Further information is available here.
